Unconscious patterns of behavior learned long ago can still be around
today, causing problems without our even being aware of them.
Remember, this was all completely unconscious! Unlike smoking or overeating, where itâs at least easy to identify the pattern, I didnât even know I had a pattern of distrusting people that was getting in my way. It was just me, living my life, day by day. I had no idea that there was this unconscious pattern going on! I didnât figure it out until I got feedback from others in an experiential workshop designed to help people become conscious of this type of thing.
Now suppose I have some kind of âbad habitâ or pattern in my life, something I keep doing over and over, even though when I consciously think about it, I say to myself, Why do I do that? I donât like that! It could be a physical thing such as smoking or overeating; a more general pattern such as procrastination or difficulty saying no; or even a subtle, hidden pattern such as my tendency to distrust people. How do I get rid of it? Why do these things have power over me?
Itâs not as simple as saying, OK, unconscious, please stop that pattern. Itâs much easier to get these patterns or reactions started up than to shut them down. Once they get started, they operate independently.
I know of two approaches to the problem of dealing with destructive unconscious reactions. For either approach you need a very clear idea about what is most important to you in life. Because if you arenât clear about that, then not only is there very little incentive for you to change, but itâs not clear which patterns are destructive, constructive, or indifferent! Thereâs a tendency to waffle back and forth to the point of frustration, then throw up your hands and forget the problem until it comes up next time. If you donât feel clear about what is most important to you in life, I highly recommend you do what it takes to figure it out. Iâll have lots more to say about that later.
